Joan Malone

Joan I. Malone departed this life on June 15, 2004 and is now Ã¢Â?Â?Sheltered in the Arms of God.Ã¢Â?Â Joan was born in Oklahoma City on February 19, 1930 and she married Jerry Malone on January 1, 1948. For 20 years Joan worked in the Oklahoma County ClerkÃ¢Â?Â?s Office. In the early 1980Ã¢Â?Â?s Joan changed careers when she, her husband and their son, Mike, entered into the theater business in the Tulsa area. Her husband, Jerry, had been an executive with Columbia and United Artist Pictures. Seeing the need to bring affordable entertainment to movie goers in Oklahoma, the Malone family opened the Southside Cinema, the first dollar theater in the state. Joan and her family went on to own or operate numerous theaters throughout the state including the Tee Pee Drive In Theater in Sapulpa, the Thunderbird Twin in Miami, the Cinema in Wagoner, the Fourteen Flags in Oklahoma City and the 51 Drive In Theater in Broken Arrow. Joan took pride in having a spotless concession stand and serving the hottest and freshest popcorn in town. After retiring from the theater business, Joan worked as a receptionist at American Abstract in Sapulpa for several years. In addition to her professional activities, Joan was also a founding member of her church in Sapulpa, Praise Center Ministries. In her spare time she played the organ, loved to send cards to people, to watch old westerns or NASCAR, and if there was a baby around, you be sure she would be holding it. She was affectionately known to many as Ã¢Â?Â?Grandma Jo.Ã¢Â?Â Joan is survived by her sister, Bettie Bradford of Yukon, her daughter and son in-law, Patty and Ron Rogers of Midwest City; her son, Mike Malone, of Glenpool; her grandchildren: Jason Malone of Moore, Rachel and Nathan Parrilli of Tulsa; Joseph and Gwendolyn Holtzclaw of Moore and her great granddaughter, Jaidyn Alexis Holtzclaw, also of Moore. Preceding Joan in death was her husband of 52 years, Jerry Malone of Glenpool; her parents, Dan and Vera Moody of Oklahoma City; her brothers, Dwayne, Donnie and Dwight Moody of Oklahoma City and her sister, Willa Dean Brantly of Tulsa. Services will be held in honor of Joan on Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at SchaudtÃ¢Â?Â?s Glenpool Funeral Service Chapel, followed by graveside services at Green Hill Memorial Gardens in Sapulpa. In respect of the quality and compassionate care they provided Joan, the family requests donations be made to SeasonÃ¢Â?Â?s Hospice in lieu of flowers.
